Technology First Community of Practice

SHIFT, the nation’s recognized leader in Technology First education and accreditation, is answering that call with the creation of the National Technology First Community of Practice (CoP). This series responds directly to the growing demand for shared learning, real-world examples, and ongoing collaboration among professionals who are leading this work. Whether you’re from a state system, provider organization, or advocacy network, this community offers a space to learn from each other - and from SHIFT’s national expertise - while building the relationships that sustain transformation.

Across the country, states, providers, and professionals are working to make Technology First more than a policy—it’s becoming a movement that redefines how people are supported to live, work, and connect. Yet, many still ask the same essential question: What does it really mean to live a Technology First approach, not just comply with it?

What the Community of Practice Offers

Each session is expert-facilitated yet deeply discussion-based, creating a supportive and energizing forum for open dialogue, practical problem-solving, and peer exchange. Participants will have the opportunity to:

Early Wins with Technology First — What’s Working and Why

Early wins play a critical role in building momentum for a Technology First approach. A successful trial, a meaningful outcome, or a small shift in how technology is used can change perspectives and open the door to broader adoption.

In this Community of Practice, we will focus on sharing those early wins and unpacking what made them successful. Participants will bring real examples of how enabling technology has supported a person’s goals and explore what contributed to that success — from how the conversation started to how challenges were navigated along the way.

This session will center on practical insight and peer exchange. To support a meaningful discussion, participants are encouraged to come prepared with a brief story to share or a lesson learned from their experience. Together, we will identify patterns, strategies, and small actions that can be replicated to build confidence and momentum across teams.

Whether you have an early success to share or are looking for ideas to get started, this session offers a space to learn from real experiences and walk away with approaches you can apply right away.

Small Changes That Had a Big Impact

Some of the most meaningful outcomes in a Technology First approach come from small, practical changes. A simple tool, a different conversation, or a shift in how support is provided can make a noticeable difference in a person’s daily life.

This Community of Practice is a facilitated conversation focused on those moments. Participants will come together to share real examples of small changes that led to meaningful outcomes, and reflect on what made those changes effective.

Together, we’ll explore how these small wins take shape, what helped them succeed, and how similar approaches might be applied in other settings. This is an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from one another’s experiences, and walk away with practical strategies that can be used right away.

To support a strong discussion, participants are encouraged to come prepared with a brief example of a small change that made a difference, or one they are hoping to make.
